Dental Guards and Retainers

What is a Night Guard?

Protect teeth from wear and tear during sleep time clenching

A night guard is a custom-made dental appliance worn over the teeth during sleep to prevent damage from teeth grinding (bruxism) or clenching. Night guards provide a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, preventing excessive tooth wear, prolonging the lifespan of fillings and crowns, reducing the risk of tooth fractures, alleviating stress-related headaches and jaw tightness, and improving sleep quality. Night guards are often recommended for patients with a bruxism habit, especially during stressful times, as well as for patients who have completed orthodontic treatment and may experience jaw discomfort.

What is a Sports Guard?

Keep your teeth safe in sport activities

A dental sports guard, also known as an athletic mouthguard, is a protective appliance worn over the teeth to shield them from injury during sports or physical activities. Custom-made by a dentist for optimal fit and comfort, sports guards cushion the impact to the face, reducing the risk of broken teeth, cut lips, and other oral injuries. They are especially important in contact sports like football, hockey, boxing, and basketball, where the risk of dental trauma is high. By absorbing and distributing the force of a blow, dental sports guards help protect both the teeth and the soft tissues of the mouth.

What is a Dental Retainer?

Provent teeth from changing positions

A dental retainer is a custom-made dental appliance designed to maintain the position of teeth, most often used after orthodontic treatments. Retainers are typically made from clear plastic or acrylic and wire, and they help keep teeth in their new, corrected positions. They are essential in preventing teeth from shifting back to their original misaligned positions. Retainers can be either removable or fixed, depending on the patient's needs and the orthodontist's recommendation.

How are They Made?

Dental guards and retainers are made in 2 easy appointments

Dental guards and retainers are custom-made in a dental lab by dental technicians, requiring two appointments for a patient to receive their appliance. During the first appointment, a dental assistant takes a digital scan of the patient’s teeth and records how they come together. This scan is sent to the dental lab to fabricate the appliance. At the second appointment, the dentist inserts the appliance, checks the fit, and makes any necessary adjustments. At North Peace Dental and Implant Centre, we offer a 6-month warranty for all dental appliances delivered from us.
