Single Tooth Implant Replacement

Single Tooth Replacement

Replacing one single tooth in patients with full dentition otherwise

A single tooth implant is an excellent solution for patients who have lost one tooth but otherwise maintain a healthy set of teeth. When a tooth is lost, the natural process of jawbone shrinkage can occur. Dental implants provide an effective option for replacing a single missing tooth while preserving the health of adjacent teeth and maintaining jawbone density. A single tooth implant offers a natural-looking result, ensures an optimal bite relationship, and provides long-term durability with proper home care and regular dental check-ups.

Alternative Treatment Options

Alternative treatment options for replacing a single missing tooth:

  • Do nothing. Not all missing teeth need to be replaced, such as wisdom teeth and teeth extracted for orthodontic purposes.

  • Dental bridge is a great permanent solution to replace missing teeth by crowning adjacent teeth with an artificial tooth made in the missing tooth location. It feels and functions like real teeth, proving good longevity and aesthetics. However, this option may not be available for all situations, depending on the location and condition of the surrounding teeth.

  • Removable partial denture (flipper) is a traditional removable device to replace missing teeth. Removable dentures are easy to fabricate and is more affordable, but it feel less real and less functional.

Single Tooth Implant Process

Know what to expect for your single tooth implant treatment

The single tooth dental implant process begins with an implant consult, where suitability and treatment options are discussed, followed by a treatment plan review session to discuss outcomes, processes and challenges. Implant surgery is then performed to place the titanium implant fixture into the bone, often combined with bone graft or sinus lift procedure if needed. After the surgery, follow up appointments at 3 days, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks are scheduled to monitor healing and potential complications. After 4 months,  a digital scan will be taken during the prosthetic stage to fabricate the custom crown, followed by a try-in/insert appointment. Once the crown is inserted, another follow-up will be done to ensure good bite relation. If required, soft tissue graft would be recommended after the crown insertion to create good maintenance environment for the implant longevity.
